AddMarkup - customize symbol?

My workflow uses the AddMarkup external command to add points to my map.  The point symbol is a red dot.  Where is this configured?  Can I override the default setting?  I see there's an AddCustomMarkup command, but I can't find an example of how to use it.  Any help appreciated!
