Test that file path is valid before opening

I have a workflow that runs an external command to open files on one of our server directories. It uses an AutoCompleteBox to return the unique file names and then builds the complete file path when it runs the external command. However, since it's an autocomplete box, it is possible to enter an invalid file name and cause an IE error message to pop up. I know I could use a combo box to eliminate this issue, but I'd like my users to be able to use autocomplete.

Is there a way to test within the workflow whether the complete file path is valid before attempting to open it so that I can return my own error message and have the user reenter the file name?
