Windows Server 2012 GC 3.13 install
Hello all,
We have one server that is Win 2008 R2 that we upgraded our GC3.11 to 3.13 and really had no problems with Essentials Manager.
But, we got another server that will be our live server. Our Server Administrator strongly suggested using Win server 2012 since the life cycle of 2008 is near end. We have had a few problems with the install. Since the user environment and strong user access controls are so new to us with 2012, we don't know where the problems are occurring. We have tried to "Run as Administrator" for everything, but have noticed some things still won't work right.
Are there any tips and tricks to installing GC Essentials on Server 2012?
One small example, the Charlotte Example Sites didn't get copied to the Sites Folder. Aren't they supposed to during the install? I'm almost positive it does. Even training talked about them being there. So, we tried to manually copy one of the sites, we get permissions warnings that you must be administrator to copy. We are able to continue with the copy and it will copy the site folder and we will see it in Manager. But, I wonder what else won't copy during the install because of these permissions warnings? And will cause us problems later on. Again, we are trying to install as administrator for everything.
Essentials Manager also doesn't display correctly, it is as though SL wasn't installed. We installed it. Manager works correctly for one user (the one who installed Silverlight) but not for another user (we all have admin rights).
Any insight will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Carmen

Hi Carmen,
The Charlotte sample sites are no longer installed to the Sites folder by default. They are instead made available in the Example Sites folder and you can copy them into the Sites folder if you wish.
Essentials REST Manager does not use Silverlight to display; it is only the Silverlight viewer that needs that (on the client side!) You should not need Silverlight to be installed on your server for REST Manager.
Are you using REST Manager from the server itself (from a remote desktop session) or from a workstation? I recommend using a workstation browser rather than a server browser, since it will have more suitable settings for displaying active content.

Thanks Malcolm, for your reply.
As for the Charlotte sites, that is nice to know it changed and our install was okay regarding that, but there is some documentation that might need changing because we were led to believe the Charlotte sites would be copied the to appropriate locaiton. Since they weren't there, we questioned everything about the install!
- Page 35 of the Installation Guide, in 9.2 discusses that a "typical installation of GCE installs sample sites and their associated data into the Sites directory...."
- Then, in training two weeks ago, I swear he said the sample sites would be there. (plus, they where there in previous install on another server)
- Page 14 of Essentials Admin guide, 5.1 section, last sentence: "When you open Manager, the home page displays a list of your configured sites, including the sample sites that ship with GC Essentials"
Silverlight Install - your answer makes sense in one user's case, but not for the other:
When we first installed GC Essentials and opened Manager and tried to create a site, we would see the dialog as shown below instead of the nicely formatted wizard. Sometimes we wouldn't see the cancel/next/back buttons.

The very next thing we did was install Silverlight and then Manager behaved as expected. Was this just coincidental? For me, I never saw the correct Manager format until we totally uninstalled and changed some Internet Explorer security settings when we got our Server Manager involved. Turns out we are the guinea pigs for Server 2012. Server Manager knew we would raise issues which would help him with future server implementations. *sigh*
With the other server (2008 R2), we have Essentials Installed and we have always run Manager from the server through Remote desktop - mostly just to keep track of where we are working. We really never had these quirky issues with that server. We had GCE installed and working in minutes on the 2008 server. However, I am quickly seeing with Server 2012 and its settings why you recommend running the REST Manager from a workstation.
Thanks,
Carmen
