change symbology based on linked data

So I have a ArcGIS Layer "Wells" and linked data from Oracle "Water Levels" - they're linked on a location code. I'd like to show the water levels in the viewer with symbology based on the depth data. Is there a way to do this?

  Sounds like you should do a join in ArcGIS. You can symbolise in ArcGIS with joined data.

  I was trying to avoid doing it at the ArcGIS level.
