Select Features not selecting

I have a bunch of searches built using workflows where the final step is to select the feature.  Everything works well but the result is that the returned feature/s are highlighted, but not actually selected upon completion of the search.  Not a huge problem but I will be building some tools off of selected features in the future, so I'd like to figure out what I'm doing wrong here.

  Allen, you might check if the columns "OBJECTID" and "Shape" are visible in you ArcMap document when you publish map services.

  those fields are listed on the rest services page for the layers in question.
