Run External Command not working in GVH 2.3

I've tried to use several commands using the Run External Command activity in a workflow, but they don't do anything. Is Run External Command the right activity to use, or is there a different one in workflow designer I should be using? The admin guide for the GVH says the commands will work in workflows unless noted in their descriptions.

  The main one's I've tried so far are ShowPushpins and OpenResultsFrame.
