Sort search results on a particular field?

Is there a way to ensure that search results are sorted (say by a particular field) so they appear in some sort of logical order? For example, our users can search for parcels by entering a street name which will often return dozens of records. I'd like to have the results sorted by house number, if possible, so they appear in some sort of logical order. The site uses instant search.
