identify/maptips slow with a site with many wms services

I have an Geocortex app that contains mainly WMS services (about 40 or so WMS services).  Most of these layers need to be identifiable since this app will be used by various users and we cannot anticipate which layer(s) are the most important to this wide audience.  Since many layers are identifiable, we have found that any identify takes an inordinate amount of time (usually more than 10 seconds).  Is there any way to make identify's more "performant"?
