When is an AGS server NOT remote?

I'd like to find out exactly what the difference is between a "remote server" and anything else?

 

Specifically, when I go in to set the collection time period, there are two sections - one entitled "Collection Interval" and the other "Collection Interval for Remote Services".  The main difference I see between these two settings is that for remote services, the shortest time period is 1 hour, whereas under "Collection Interval" you can also specify minutes (15 or more).

 

The AGS server I want to monitor does not have Agent installed - is that what makes the difference between which of the two settings gets used?  Why are we not able to query remote servers with the same frequency as 'non-remote' servers?

  Hi Peter,

   

  A remote server is a server that is being monitored after being discovered through Portal or ArcGIS online.  Servers that you explicitly configure, either using remote monitoring, or by installing the agent on them use the regular (shorter) collection interval.  

   

  Since remote servers are outside your organization, we limit how often we collect from them.  Because they are remote, they typically take longer to respond, and if there is any sort of rate limiting on them, frequent scans from Analytics may cause your network range to become banned from accessing the server.  

   

  If you want to collect more frequently, you can explicitly add the servers using the Analytics configuration page.
