The difference between new user & returning user;

    Hi Lubna,

A new user is a user that is navigating to your application for the first time.  Users are browser based. So opening a new application in Chrome then Firefox would be seen by Analytics as two new users.

A Returning user is a user that has previously been identified (using their browser) that has returned to the application.

    I hope this helps!

    Thanks,

    Hi Daniel,

This is still vague. I was thinking that the new user is IP address based and thus all who access the application from the same machine (same IP address) are counted to be returning visitors.

    Hi Danny,

Despite the fact that I try to login to our application with a new user (I just create it and no one have this user) using firefox as a first time, the Geocortex Analytics fails to read this user as a new user !

    what do you think?

    Hi Lubna and Jamal,

Jamal, it's not based on an IP address.  An ID of the system is generated based on the browser, and the machine's unique ID.  This is why you can get 2 new sessions if your user uses 2 different browsers (the assumption is that users will use the same browser when they access the maps).

Lubna, I just had a chat with the developers about this, and it sounds like at the moment, what you are seeing is the expected behaviour.  The new and returning sessions are not tied to the username (just the browser/machine ID I mentioned above).  This is something we are looking at improving in the future.

    I hope this helps!

    Thanks,

MAC ID indicates for a particular machine and then all who are accessing the application from that machine are referred to be returning visitors. How this is linked to browsers?

    Hi Jamal,

I think I may have used some confusing terminology here, I apologize if I confused you.  The machine's unique ID is not based on a MAC address, it is a unique GUID that is randomly generated for each machine/browser combination.  So you will get one unique GUID for one browser on machine A, and another unique GUID for a second browser, which is also on machine A.

    I hope that helps!

    Thanks,

    Hi Danny,

I want to ask if we can read or change this ID (the unique GUID for the browser on machine).

By the way, the analytics use new\ returning user terms which is not related to the user name but related to an ID, which is confusing us.

    Best,

    Hi Lubna,

No, you cannot change this value.  I'm not sure why you would want to, what is the use case?

    Thanks,
