How many Layer Catalogs can you have?
I'm playing with Layer Catalogs for the first time. I was thinking to break them up by subject area in case I only want to include some of them in some sites. Was working fine until I added my 3rd layer catalog to my site - seemed to add fine, but is not seen when I use the site...only the first two show up.

It turns out that 3rd one may've been corrupt. I tried creating a large catalog with most of my layers, and when I try to open it, it just hangs.. So I guess I have a general design question - Is it better to have a number of smaller catalogs, or should you just have one large catalog? 0 -
Hi Mike
You are not going to get any performance benefit by having multiple small layer catalogs. However, if you have one big layer catalog, it might take some time for it show all layers when you open layer catalog view by clicking layer catalog button in toolbar. I would recommend you to have layers which are useful for all your users in your normal site. And layers which only some specific users will use in layer catalog site. As there are some limitations of using layer catalog, it doesn't support all the features of a normal site.0 -
Yes, that is what I tried - I put all except for the basic layers into layer catalog, but it would never open. 0 -
Looks like there is something wrong with the layer catalog site. Do you get any warnings when opening layer catalog site in essentials rest manager?
If you have big layer catalog site, it might take some time to load after clicking layer catalog button but it should load.
If you are using fiddler, you will see request like this when loading viewer

Check what response you get.0 -
Yes, now it is showing some validation errors. Funny, cause that is the first thing I looked for last week when it didn't work... Happened to me in an earlier one as well - looked fine at first, then open Manager next day and it is bad! Anyway, took out 3 data connections it didn't like, and now it seems to work fine, and it opens fast. 0 -
So now that it is working, I have some questions. I notice that when I group layers into folders and sub-folders that the whole file structure gets added to the layer list and becomes quite awkward. Is there a "Best Practice" on how to organize the layers? Should they all just be listed as a single list how ever hundreds of layers long? That way they should all just come in directly under the Layer Catalog folder in the layer list - just the layer, and no tree. I suppose that is workable if folks use the filter tool to find the layer they want instead of searching the list manually.. 0 -
Great.
Yes, the whole structure will be preserved when adding layers from layer catalog.
It's upto you how you want to organize layers. I would recommend to have layers from only one service in a folder so that you get transparency sliders.0
