Use polygon features as Spatial Filter (or intersect tool)?

Looking at building a new workflow to create a tool that, very basically put, finds all points that meet X criteria that fall within X type of polygon on the map.  So, essentially an intersect gp operation, or leveraging polygons as a spatial filter, where you can also specify a subset of both the point layer and the polygon layer. 

 

Before heading down this road, I wanted to check with other folks to see if I'm missing something obvious that comes out of the box (wouldn't be the first time!) or if anyone has built similar tools - seems to me this could be a fairly common need across the Geocortex user community.

  You can copy a selected polygon feature to the drawing layer (in GVH 2.9.0). If there is polygon markup in the drawing layer, the Filter tool has the option in the Map Area combobox to use all polygon drawings in the map.
