Printing or exporting the map produces a blank page
Hi everyone,
We're looking into an issue that has very recently brought to our attention where printing or exporting the map from Geocortex Viewer for HTML5 results in a blank image or PDF. I will provide updates as they become available; apologies for the inconvenience in the meantime.
Update (2017-10-12): On October 11th, Microsoft released new updates that resolves this issue, and our QA team has verified this fix. You can download and install these updates via Windows Update, via Windows Software Update Services (WSUS), or apply them individually by downloading the appropriate installer from Microsoft Update Catalog. The specific updates for this issue are:
Windows 8.1/ WS2012 R2 (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/4043767) 4043767 (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=4043767) Catalog Windows Server 2012 (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/4043769) 4043769 (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=4043769) Catalog Windows 7/WS 2008 R2 (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/4043766) 4043766 (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=4043766) Catalog Windows Server 2008 (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/4043768) 4043768 (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=4043768) Catalog
Update (2017-10-04): Here's an up-to-date summary of this issue:
Who is affected?
This bug affects all versions of Geocortex Essentials and Geocortex Viewer for HTML5 or Geocortex Viewer for Silverlight where Essentials is installed on a server running .NET Framework 4.6 or 4.7 on the following Windows Operating systems:
- Windows Server 2012 R2
- Windows Server 2012
- Windows Server 2008 R2
- Windows Server 2008 SP2
- Windows 8.1
- Windows 7 SP1
How can I tell if my Essentials instance is affected?
The easiest way to tell is to launch your Geocortex Viewer application and (https://docs.geocortex.com/essentials/gvh/2.9/admin-help/Default.htm#gvh/admin/modules/exportmap-module.htm) export a map image . If the resulting image is blank (white), your Essentials instance is affected. Note that, for printing, if you have print jobs enabled for (https://docs.geocortex.com/essentials/reporting/4.8/help/Default.htm#rpt/help/printing.htm) large-format printing , you may see some graphics, but others, such as markup or feature layers, will be missing.
Is there a workaround?
Yes. Microsoft's current recommendation is that you remove the update causing this issue and selectively re-apply the security fix that was part of this update rollup. Follow the instructions in (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4043601/rendering-issues-after-the-september-12-2017-net-security-and-quality) this Microsoft article to remove the appropriate update and install the security-only update that corresponds to the operating system on your server. Please note that the ID or KB number of the update that caused this issue and that of the security-only update meant to work around it will depend on your server’s operating system. You may also want to disable automatic Windows updates while this issue persists in order to prevent Windows from re-installing the update you have removed.
Is there a longer-term fix?
Microsoft is working to resolve this issue, and they are hoping that a fix will be available as part of October's security and quality rollups. We will be testing these updates as they become available in the next week or so and will follow up with Microsoft again if the update does not properly restore printing and exporting.

Andrew,
We have a similar setup : multiple PC-S with a centralized / managed WSUS ( local updates server). You'd uninstall patch from GIS/Geocortex server and DECLIINE the KBKB4040972 / KB4041085 updates in the catalog/list of updates , on the WSUS server.
I hope this helps!0 -
It would have been nice if Geocortex would have let the rest of us now about the problem. We just ran into it this morning by customers calling us saying they can't print.
Please Geocortex when something like this happens send an email out to your users letting them know of the problem.
Thanks0 -
It would be interesting to know the scale of the issue. Do you think 50% of GE users are affected, or 5% 0 -
I like the idea of Jimmy Brink such that we get informed regarding the issues that are recognized by Geocortex team. 0 -
You can subscribe to the forums and recieve notification of any posts. I got an email notification of this post right around the time users started reporting the issue to me. The notifications also made it easy to track the issue and know when LG had a fix. Only downside is you will get emails for everything, relevant to you or not. 0 -
I did subscribe to this forum but I never got the notifcation and didnt know about the issue until yesterday morning when our users suddenly started encountering problems with printing of maps 0 -
Similar problem here on a Windows 2012R2 machine. After KB4041085 update my print layouts were not working. Luckily I am in a virtualized environment and had a snapshot of the machine's state before I applied the offending Microsoft update. I rolled the machine back to the pre-update state and viola! the maps work again. Now I wait for a better fix from Microsoft. 0 -
We've just received word from Microsoft that the fix for this issue is now available as part of this month's updates:
Windows 8.1/ WS2012 R2 (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/4043767) 4043767 (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=4043767) Catalog Windows Server 2012 (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/4043769) 4043769 (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=4043769) Catalog Windows 7/WS 2008 R2 (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/4043766) 4043766 (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=4043766) Catalog Windows Server 2008 (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/4043768) 4043768 (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=4043768) Catalog
We've only just been notified, so we haven't had a chance to fully test these updates ourselves yet, but -- anecdotally -- I've applied update 4043767 via Windows Update to a Server 2012 R2 test server I'm running and printing functionality has been restored.
If you apply these updates and are still seeing blank images when printing or exporting a map, please contact (support@geocortex.com) . I will post an update once our QA team has had a chance to evaluate these latest updates.0 -

The QA team has verified that Microsoft's latest updates have resolved the map printing and exporting issue (GE-9191). If the October 11th updates fail to resolve this issue for you, please contact (support@geocortex.com) . 0 -
We tryed the update and looks like working fine.
Don't know if it should be considered a collateral of this Windows Update, but Geocortex Core (and it's children) are heavily consuming CPU right now. Maybe just a case or someone else is experiencing the same?

Below is a screen shot from microsoft download center. IT want's to make sure this is the right update fix issue. When the download KB4043767 all the see is KB4043763 instead. Want to verify this is correct or are we missing something?

This worked for us - thanks. Running a regular Windows Update will not cover it (even with optional updates) - you'll need to download the specific files itemized above before the problem will be patched.

Jeff: the updates listed in the dialogue box from your screenshot (4043763, 4040974, 4040981) are the three updates that make up 4043767. I would think you'd want to download and apply all of those updates. I can confirm, however, that installing 4043763 (only) to a VM running 2012 R2 did restore printing for me.
Rick: That's good to know. I do see the appropriate October updates listed in Windows Update for the VMs I have running here, so it's possible that their visibility will depend on the system's configuration.0 -
Hello, we could succesfully install the patches and have the system work.
As a collateral effect of this unistall and reinstall patches we had our server exposed to some idiots that crypted everything and asked for a ransome in bitcoins. So now the server is definetly lost :(0 -
Jordan,
Another question. Does this update need to run where the GEM site is installed and\or GIS Server site location? We actually as of now don't have a test GEM site just a production one. but have a GIS test environement.0 -
Hi Jeff,
Printing/Exporting is done server side so the Windows Updates need to be run on the server where Essentials is installed.
Thanks,
Mike Ketler0 -
I am experiencing the same blank map export with HTML5V 2.11.1.1543 and Essentials 4.10. However, I am running Windows Server 2016. Is there a remedy for this OS? 0 -
Please can you confirm if this affects Windows Server 2016? 0
