How do I create a custom workflow that uses a feature template as input?

I would like to create a custom workflow whick mimics the "Create New Feature tool" that is provided in Geocortex.  This tool launches a feature service's feature template on initiation.  I would like to do the same thing in my custom workflow (show the feature template as one of the first things the workflow does).  Anyone have an example of how to start this?
