Labels are Difficult to Read Over Aerial Photos

My issue is that the labels for my map service looks great over Topographic maps and Street maps but as soon as I turn on an Aerial photo it looks really bad, in fact difficult to read.

There is no mask on the label when published from ArcGIS but it looks like there is when you turn on the aerial (see image below). If you flip back to the Topo/Street Map the "mask" look goes away. Even if I turn the Opacity of the Aerial to 50%, it still gives the mask appearance. The font when publishing is Arial Black, Bold, size 10, Lapis Lazilu color.

Is there a workaround for this issue when publishing a map service that has labels turned on? Is it my font that's causing this issue? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

That's due to aliasing.

Make sure you have the appropriate anti-aliasing options set when you publish the map service. You can also force Geocortex to download the images in a higherquality (and as bigger files) in the details of the map service in Essentials. (Map Service>Display Setings>Image Format).

Dan's got it. Try chaging (Map Service>Display Setings>Image Format) to png32, which has better transparency support than other image formats.

Thank you all for such a timely response. What a vast improvement when applying the png32. The "mask" look has gone away.

Thanks all, png32 is the right answer and it supports symbol transparency, not png24 or any other. and I can leave anti-aliasing to none.
