save features to highlight later in workflow

I have a workflow that selects a feature then buffers and collects features from the same layer and highlights the results. I want to show the original selection in a different color.

 

I've tried copying the original select into a different feature set then bringing it back and highlighting the graphics using a different color and a different highlight layer. That sort of works but as soon as there is a map refresh (zoom in/or) the entire selection set changes to the new colors.

  Use the Update Graphics Layer activity.  Note that the markup layers are pretty sticky and will hang around in the viewer until cleared by some command or the user markup editing tools.
