2+ Columns for Legend?

I'm unable to fit all legend items on A3 even at 4 point font.

 

I don't seem to be able to make the legend span more than 1 column

regardless of width.

 

Is this possible?

  Being able to turn off the data frame or layer names might also help.

  I asked the same thing at the Esri UC, and one of the developers was going to try to incorporate this into future releases if possible.

  Is there really no way to use 2 columns for a legend? This really limits the portrait view.
