Printing 5 Legend needs to be much more customizable
Just getting going with Printing 5 (v5.1), and I had high hopes that the legend functionality would be improved from Essentials printing. Like many users, we run into problems with the legend being too long to fit into legend item in the template. Smart filtering is a HUGE improvement to that. But I must admit I'm a little taken back by the print formatting of the Series 5 legend. Here's a comparison of the Essentials (left) vs Series 5 (right) legends:
It's a *huge* step backwards with regards to being able to fit a long legend into the legend space, and is basically a show stopper for us being able to start using Printing 5. Here are my ideas to improve things:
- Option to remove map service names from legend. For most situations, this is only adds to the clutter.
- Allow for a single symbol to be on same line as the description (like it was with Essentials printing)
- Allow for cached services to be excluded from legend
- Allow font size changes
- Allow padding changes. Items are too far apart by default
Thanks,
Chris

Completely agree, there just isn't the flexibility of what should/should not be included in the legend or sizing of various legend elements. Map service name is really unnecessary and the overall size is too big and can be repetitive. Smart Filtering is a great improvement but we do need more fine grained controls for the legend.

My use case: I don't have a need to have the group/sub group hierarchy in a legend, but just the layer name and a small tight symbol next to the name. If the parent headings are truly important I can squeeze them in the layer name. It's rare for my printed maps to have less that 20 layers turned on so keep it short and compressed is my request! Here is an A3 (about same as tabloid) template example that only fits 13 legend items. I would like to see about 30-50 rows fit at font size 7. Thanks.

I agree with the idea and all the comments here. I run into another issue with Printing 5 Legend: it includes symbols rendered on a graphic layer by a Geocortex Essential workflow for labelling the features returned from a search. Gecortex Essentials Printing does not have this problem.

Can't believe that this version is taking a step backward from previous versions on this. We also need to be able to show JUST the layer name, not the map service or any grouping. Also need to change/reduce font size to accommodate more legend items. These shortcomings are hugely disappointing and are preventing us from moving ArcMap users to our app instead of ArcGIS Pro.
