Check polygon self-intersection

Hi, does anybody know a quick way to check whether a polygon from the geometry picker is self-intersecting?

The only way I can think of is splitting the polygon in line segments, and checking for all the lines if they intersect with one of the other lines. But I'm afraid that this calculation will take a long time for complex geometries. Also, I'm pretty sure that the nodes will be seen as points of intersection.. Therefore, any other ideas are very welcome!

Case example: I want to prevent the geometry shown in the image.

  With the Simplify Geometry task https://docs.geocortex.com/workflow/latest/help/Default.htm#wf5/help/activities/simplify-engine-task.htm you can make a geometry topologically correct.
