How do I actually select features in a layer in the html5 viewer?

For example our users select records in the property layer, I want them to be able to run a workflow that will remove certain records (eg. where type=street) from that selection.

 

This is a process included in around a dozen series-4 workflows currently. we get the selection, modify it somehow, then reselect in the viewer. Trying to replicate this in WF5. I'm able to get the selection via workflow inputs, then can run a query to get my modified selection ... how do I send that selection to the viewer? I don't want it in a form it needs to be a selection. Any help would be appreciated.
