Map scale doesn't appear

I'm using the Map Info control in Printing 5.9 to add the current scale to the print template. I've got it set to Type = Scale but it just doesn't show up in the created pdf. It's configured to print from an Essentials 4.14.2 site. Printing is set to reference our internal Geometry service and there's no problem getting the map to appear, just the scale. Basemap is a vector tile service in case that matters.

  Further to this, with Chrome dev tools I can see the map scale is being passed via the request payload to https://fqdn/Geocortex/Printing/service/job/run successfully:
