Hide basemap in legend

    You can control this in the Esri map viewer. Select Basemap in the left menu. Then on the right there's a toggle for "Show in map legend"

    It took me a while to figure this out, even with the above comment (which did definitely help me to get started on the hunt).  So here are some more details, for the purpose of helping other people.

    1. Click basemap in the left-hand toolbar/menu
    2. With your desired basemap selected, click the arrow next to its name at the top of the pane
    3. Then in the pane with details of the basemap, click a layer under “Base,” or click the “i” info icon next to its name, to see more configuration details in a pane on the right-hand side of the screen.
    4. In the Symbology section of the right-hand pane, click the toggle button for “show in basemap legend,” if available.  If not available, I guess it won't appear in the legend.
    5. Save changes
