This article provides step-by-step instructions for GIS administrators to upgrade existing VertiGIS Studio on-premises installations. We'll cover upgrading VertiGIS Studio Web, VertiGIS Studio Workflow, VertiGIS Studio Reporting, and VertiGIS Studio Printing, including backing up your applications, upgrading the software, and updating your applications to work with the new versions.
Note: You do not need to reapply your license when performing an in-place upgrade.
Prerequisites
Before beginning the upgrade process:
- Ensure you have administrative access to both the server and ArcGIS Enterprise portal.
- If this is a production app, schedule the upgrade during a maintenance window to minimize disruption and notify users about the scheduled downtime.
- Check for any version compatibility requirements between different VertiGIS Studio products
Back Up Your Existing Studio Content
IMPORTANT: Always create backups before performing an upgrade. This ensures you can restore your applications if issues occur during or after the upgrade process.
To back up content, use the appropriate Designer application and its Export functionality to download a local copy.
- Open the application, workflow, report, or print layout
- For Web, Navigate to File > Download App
- For Workflow, Reporting, and Printing, Navigate to File > Export
- Save the exported files to a safe location outside the server
Your organization may have additional processes or requirements for backups, such as server snapshots.

- You should see a notification message stating "This app has been automatically upgraded"
- This indicates that the application structure has been updated to be compatible with the new version
- If you don't see this message, check the browser console for errors.
Save and Test the Upgraded Application
- Save the application and test it thoroughly:
- Test within the Designer preview
- Launch the development version in a new browser tab or window
- Test all critical workflows and features
- Verify map services and data connections still function
Deploy to Other Environments
For applications with multiple deployment stages (test, staging, production):
- Use Deployment Stages to push the new version through your environments
- Click the Deploy button to promote the application to the next stage
- After each deployment, verify the application works correctly in the new environment before proceeding to the next stage
