Update Map View to Print Scale
I don't understand what the toggle called "Update Map View to Print Scale" on the Print widget in Web does, can someone explain it? When hovered over it, it says map view will be set to print scale when printing. Isn't that what it always does? There's an input text box for the scale that automatically populates when printing, so what else would the scale be at for the print if not that? Why wouldn't you want it to do that?
-
Hovering over the tool now says:
“If enabled, the map view will be set to print scale during printing in order to capture out-of-scale sublayers. NOTE: if enabled and your map contains SubType Group Layers and/or Graphical Layers the content might be clipped for these layers.”
It seems to zoom in and then out real quick when you hit Print, so it seems to do what it says, but I'm still confused why this is a toggle. Don't you always want the scale in the print widget to be what you're printing at? Why else is there a scale there that's different than what the map extent's scale widget shows?
I tried printing when my map extent doesn't show layer A, but I knew one zoom level in A would show. Printing both with and without that toggle printed the same map with A showing even though my current map extent didn't show it.
My users are also asking what this does and I have no way to hide it if it doesn't do anything for them.

Also not clear for me. VertiGIS Studio Support , can you provide an example or some clarification, please?
I have a customer who wants to print features that would normally be invisible at a certain scale. I tested the toggle, but doesn't seem to work.

Maybe this explanation can help you:
The tooltip now says “If enabled, configured scale ranges of layers are considered. If disabled, only visible layers in the current view are considered, which ensures a correct export of geo-referenced raster data, like GeoTIFFs.”

The toggle function ‘Update Map View to Print Scale’ only zooms in briefly to the print scale and shows which layers etc. are visible at this scale.
An example: The Print Scale is 2054, the Map Scale is 3000 and you have layers A and B that are visible from 1:2200 (zoomed in).
- Function ‘Update Map View to Print Scale’ toggled ON
- You do not see the layers A and B in your current map, but they are visible in the print output. So, if this toggle function is enabled, you zoom in to the Print Scale and then only the layers visible on the print scale are printed. With other words, configured scale ranges of layers are considered.
- If the function is disabled, you print just the layers you currently see, although the layers A and B are visible on the print scale. With other words, only visible layers in the current view are considered.

Some additional thoughts from me:
- I agree, the current default behavior (toggle is ON) should be the correct setting for 99% of all printing cases.
- Please contact our support providing the specific web map, Studio Web App configuration and a video of the problem, if
- the web map has visibility restrictions (minimum and maximum zoom levels) and
- the current map scale and print scale are above/below such a zoom level limit and
- activating/deactivating the toggle does not show any difference in the created printout

A new feature regarding the printing area preview will be released with Studio Web 5.36 in June:
We have added an option to lock the print scale in the printing component. When activated, the map can be zoomed and panned freely, while the printing extent remains fixed and moves with the map. This enables users to check layer visibility by setting the map scale to match the print scale.
The print scale lock is automatically enabled in specific scenarios and cannot be toggled—for example, during line prints, when the Snap to Zoom option is configured, or when a print projection is selected. [312648]

Stefan Grundtner and Jakob Furrer , thank you for the clarification. Looking forward to the ‘lock’ feature in 5.36.
However, right now we are at 5.33. When I change the print scale, the map scale automatically changes as well (and vice versa). This means the toggle doesn't work. Is this a known bug? Am I doing something wrong?

For VSW pre 5.36, the printing area preview is fixed and includes a static, grayed-out border outside of the printing area. Changing the map scale affects the printing scale and vice versa.
The behavior influenced by the toggle “Update Map View to Print Scale” is only visible when the “Print” action is activated. Also, the printout content may change (depending on the layer configuration), which is the goal of the this functionality.
When the toggle is activated, pressing the “Print” button triggers a quick, temporary zoom to the print scale to update layer dependencies. After the printing request is sent, the zoom reverts to the previous scale. This transition happens swiftly and can be easy to miss.
The new upcoming “Lock” feature will separate the map scale from the print scale.
However, the quick and temporary zoom adjustment will still occur if the toggle is enabled, ensuring that the printing content reflects the correct print scale and not the current zoom level in the map viewer.
If issues with the toggle persist, please contact VertiGIS support. Provide a video and detailed description of the expected versus actual behavior for analysis.
Currently, no regressions are known for this feature.0 -
Thank you for the explanation Jakob Furrer and Stefan Grundtner !

I just updated to VS Web 5.36 and Printing (including the print engine) to 5.27.1 however I can't still manage it to work properly. What am I doing wrong? I have a customer who wants to print features that would normally be invisible at a certain scale.
I tried all combinations of enabling/disabling the ‘lock’ and ‘update map to print scale’ options and in all cases, the output pdf is just a zoomed in image of the yellow box. Example:

Hi SIGGIS Helpdesk,
Thank you for sharing the screenshot. Upon review, I don’t see any inconsistencies or issues.
The upper half shows a relatively small yellow print area, which suggests that the “Lock” feature was enabled and the user zoomed out in the map view. This behavior is expected: the print area and print scale remain fixed, while the screen scale changes independently.
The lower half displays a successful printout. The printed extent precisely matches the highlighted yellow area from above, further confirming that the map and print scales are correctly decoupled and handled as intended.
Notably, the printout includes several map elements that are not visible in the zoomed-out map view—such as annotations of the underground water canal, buildings, and sewer lines as well as a labeling of the street name in a small font size. This indicates that the map was rendered at the correct print scale rather than a magnified version of the screen view.
There are also no signs of pixelation, which implies that the output is vector-based, not rasterized. All this strongly suggests that “Update Map View to Print Scale” was enabled and functioned correctly.
I did notice that the legend area appears too small to display all items. If a complete legend is required, I recommend using a layout package:- A printing legend can be defined in its own layout, which will be appended after the main map content as one or more additional pages.
- Two layouts (main map + legend) can be grouped into a single layout package.
- Creating such packages currently requires VertiGIS Studio Desktop.
For more details, see:

- Manage Layouts – Studio Desktop for Printing in ArcGIS Pro
I have a customer who wants to print features that would normally be invisible at a certain scale.
Currently, VertiGIS Printing does not support printing features that are not visible at the same scale in the map view. The printout will always reflect what the map would display at that scale.
To include features that are normally scale-suppressed, the layer definitions (min/max scale) need to be adjusted prior to printing. This change will affect both the on-screen map view and the printed output.
If issues with the printing persist, please contact VertiGIS support. Provide a video and detailed description of the expected versus actual behavior for analysis.0 -
Jakob Furrer I'm also on Web 5.36 and print engine 5.27.1 and my locked print preview shrinks too. I've put in a ticket (#129975) with a video. In my case, the actual PDF isn't that zoomed in area, but a wider area, so it's mismatched with the print preview box.

We have been able to reproduce and fix the reported issue regarding the shrinking print preview.
The cause of the problem lies in map services with certain non-metric units (e.g. "US Survey Foot").
This issue is tracked under Bug 337806: VGS Printing Web: Printing extent overlay changes size unexpectedly when locked.
The Fix is currently being tested and shall be included in the upcoming Studio Web (5.38) release.

Thanks Jakob Furrer ! I can confirm that it has been fixed in 5.38.
