REST Manager: Map >> Display Format >> Image Format
Can someone from Latitude just confirm that the display settings (image format) displayed in the REST manager actually overrides your default AGS map service settings?
Other than the obvious, what is the purpose of this function as i struggle to understand why you wouldn't align the two (or want to change your original published format)?
Can you also confirm the recommended approach is to align with that of your published service?

Hi Brad,
Yes, the Image Format setting does override the default configured by the AGS map service.
Why did we bother making this configurable?
- Since it is a settable property of Esri's API we want to allow you to configure it in your site (even if it is somewhat obscure).
- Many customers connect to external services where someone else controls the default format. For example: arcgisonline.
- You may have one map service that serves two different applications with different needs. For example: a mobile app may need to use JPEG to conserve bandwidth while a web app may need PNG32 to support alpha transparency.
The different formats present you with a trade-off between functionality and performance. I would choose the format that best suits my particular application.
If the AGS service is cached all the images are generated in a particular format so requesting them in a higher quality format doesn't really do anything for you (except incur slight a performance hit as each image is converted).
In an AGS dynamic service there is no performance penalty when requesting a non-default format, though there will be differences in the download size of the images.
