Printing to bypass cache and print dynamic service
Folks,
Given the quality of printing 96dpi caches is degraded significantly with the poor PDF engine - why it puts a washed out jpeg in the pdf is anyone's guess? Size perhaps? but this really needs to be looked at. We have competitive products here that handle pdf generation very well, and at present we are resorting to running two map services of essentially the same thing - our backdrop topo service is both cached for general use, and dynamic - for printing only.
The pdf generator is unusable, I'll be frank about that. The png output is much better although the image does not get generated at the paper sizes set up. So if you guys can consider a couple of options that would be great;
1. Putting png quality maps into the pdf to at least get some sort of quality from the cached services OR
2. Adding an option to the print dialog (thinking out aloud here; ) to enable printing of the back-end dynamic service to the cache that may have maplex on etc.. to generate high quality mapping and also enable you to specify a higher dpi for even better printing.
we're chasing this latter option up with our local distributor to see what would need to be done. But at present the use of two map services to circumvent the poor excuse of a pdf generation tool is bordering on ridiculous. This seems a big deal for those that have taken the time to tune their caching, only to be shown the output is poor. Adding another map service, and or site - as others have suggested is not ideal. The issue needs to be fixed at the source.
regards
Gareth
