program C# development samples for workflows

Our programmers want to start developing custom workflow activities for essentials, but they are unfamiliar with what GE may need to recognize their custom workflow in designer.  They are also curious about passing variables to and from existing GE workflow activities.  Are there any samples available from GE for the purpose, or is there a developers guide for workflow development for GE?  I have already pointed them to many workflow samples and papers on the web, but they seem to be needing something more precise and direct on how to "make their code work in our workflows!"  any help here would be appreciated, now that I have their attention.
