boolean domain dynamic symbols

I've used ArcGIS Mobile (Windows) to create applications for editing features in the field.  In order to keep track of changes on the fly, I symbolize the feature layer based on a coded boolean domain value.  When the field operator changes the boolean value in the edit table (inspected =1), the feature dynamically changes colour on the map.  This simple functionality helps the user keep track of their daily progress.   

*Picture a hydrant inspection layer: red hydrants (not inspected), green hydrants (inspected) 

I've tried to reproduce this functionality in the SLV without success.  The user is unable to edit the boolean field if it is tied to the layer symbol.
