I have about 500 internal users and 3 public sites as well.  I run the essentials application services and rest api on my arcgis SOM server which is also our GIS web server. I also have 3 soc's for arcgis server. My environment is virutalized as well and each server has 4 cores and beween 6gb to  8gb of ram on each machine. With this setup I run about 12 different essentials sites using silverilght but there is definetly room to expand.

We've setup a 'distributed' environment as outlined in the install guide (page 6?)

Purely due to load on hot days when we get fires - we've had to ramp things up - or at least have that scalability in place where we can turn on our servers if needed.

We have One GE Application server, with 8 ArcGIS Server 'slaves', with just the GE REST installed on these (see diagram in install guide) We did have just the 4 slaves but this went into meltdown on our first bad fire day - so we doubled the capacity in a couple of hours. On top of all this is the Network Load Balancer. We'll pare the site back to 4 AGS boxes over the winter, and will reassess how people are accessing our 2 sites - one vanilla, the other with bells and whistles. Both cop a pounding on bad days, but we'll be looking at other means of delivering our view only vanilla site - ie. GE HTML5 viewer, ArcGIS online etc.... to take load off the system, as we are planning on introducing new sites - perhaps 2 more, and allowing access to another 500 users on top of the 500 we have now.

It's all about usage - if you have optimizer - make use of it, or other tools to tell you just how many hits you're getting a day, bandwidth consumed, and server performance with CPU/memory etc....

    cheers

We have around 280-300 internal users and 1 site, We have 1 primary server that runs Geocortex  Essentials and ArcGIS for Server 10.1, this server has 4 cores and 12gb of RAM , and 800gb Storage for cache map services.

This is connected to a file data store which contains our file geodatabases for our dynamic map services.

In our environment the essentials IIS worker process sits at a around 900mb-1.3gb of RAM in the task manager the number of concurrent users is normally around 10-20.

Optimiser is a good to use
