Printing map series/books, what would be the possible options?
Hi,
Has anybody tried printing map series / books from Geocortex? Like what can be done in the Data Driven Pages or old DS Mapbooks for ArcGIS Desktop What would be the possible options?
Right now I can think of two ways:
1. In workflow, Create a grid index feature set of user specified extent, maybe via a GPservice, then loop through the feature set using each index feature as the extent of the Print Map tool, finally merge the PDFs into one, or
2. Use arcpy.mapping library creating a map series GP (refer to ESRI Resource Centre, Tutorial: Advanced high-quality web map printing/exporting using arcpy.mapping). This requires converting the web map to json format as the input of the GP service. Is that possible in Geocortex? We’re using GE3.14 and SV1.9
What other ways are available? Thanks.
Regards,
Jack

in the old days you could enable feature maps and it would create a report with a series of map images. you build the report with the report designer. might be an option worth looking into.

Hi Jeff, That's a great idea! Thanks I'll definitely give a try.

So, there's no way to export the map (Silverlight Viewer) as JSON so I can leverage the Export Web Map Task servcie in ArcGIS 10.1?

Did anyone find a solution to this?

Jeff's reply of using feature maps is one method. Create a page index and zoom to each and export each. The other option is to create a background geoprocessor.

I'm also interested to know if there is a way to export a map, layers etc. to JSON for input into the Export Web Map Task rest endpoint service.

if you go to the geocortex rest service, you can show the entire site in json, you can also convert featuresets to json using featureset.tojson.

Thanks Jeff. I can see what you're meaning with the geocortex rest service but how would one integrate this via a Workflow or am I right in thinking it would require custom code? The equivalent of the Export Map option but with a JSON output would be ideal. This could then be modified (via Workflow) and a couple of extra items added to integrate it with the Export Web Map Task.

Try this if it helps. It's based on neighborhood boundaries or map sheets/quads from an index (grid) layer.
