Secure map services without SSL encryption
Is it possible to access secured map services if you do not use SSL encryption on your ArcGIS Server web adaptor? We are using Web Tier authentication in ArcGIS Server 10.2 with Windows Authentication in IIS for the Web Adaptor. Geocortex will not accept Window’s users (who have publisher rights) or the Primary Site Admin to connect to secure services. Here’s the error message:
There was an error connecting to the host http://devgismapvsrv/arcgis/rest/services with the credentials provided. If the host server requires SSL please ensure its certificate is trusted. Underlying error message: The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.
Using this same installation of Geocortex, I can connect to secure map services on a server that is uses SSL encryption (https). This is why I’m wondering if Geocortex will allow me to use secure map services without SSL encryption (http).

You can use secure map services in Geocortex without SSL encryption. If you are using Windows Authentication, when you add a service in Manager, it is the user who is set to be the identity of the EssentialsAdministratonAppPool that will be used to authenticate against ArcGIS Server. You won't have to click on the "Access Secured Services" button and enter user credentials.
By default when you install Essentials, there are local users created called Essentials and EssentialsAdmin who will be used to run the Essentials Application Pools. However, these are local users, so if your ArcGIS Server is located on a different machine, you will need to change the Application Pools to use Domain users who have access to your map service. There is more information in the following article: https://support.geocortex.com/securing-map-services-with-windows-security.
I'm guessing that because you can use Essentials with a different ArcGIS Server, the only problem is that you haven't granted access in this ArcGIS Server to the users running the EssentialsAppPool and EssentialsAdministrationAppPool.
