Web Mercator - Analysis with Shape_Area & Shape_Length
Hi there,
I'm curious to hear how people are dealing with the issue of length and area with Web Mercator? There are ways to deal with it for the buffer tool, the measure tool, and the scales in printed maps BUT how are people dealing with it for spatial analysis ?
For example, I'd like to give my users the power to select parcels of a certain size with the query builder or total up the lengths of roads, etc.
The only options I see here are;
- Create an "Area" and/or a "Length" field(s) for each feature class and calculate the geometry of each using the desired local coordinate system/projection (i.e. UTM NAD83 Zone X) --> very cumbersome with 50+ layers
- Don't have a mashable web app and publish all my services in my desired local coordinate system/projection --> OK for internal use but not desirable for public use
- Have mixed projections in my web apps --> I feel like this will have its own list of headaches... performance being one of them
Does anyone have any thoughts, other suggestions, or experiences they can share?
Thanks so much for any feedback!

Grant,
my 2c,
we ditched it in favour of a more acccurate projection for our state. We found the measurements were just far too inaccurate for our purposes and saw no major benefit in using Web Mercator, wll, we are not missing it anyway! We use lamberts so we are now getting the desired accuracy which is what's most important for us.
good luck
