Lat/Long Invalid Format
I would like to plot points, but when I tested the data I was given, I'm receiving and invalid format error while using the Lat/Lon (DMS) coordinate system. Any idea what's wrong with this format?
46°29'23.763"N
80°49'55.387"W
When I place a plot point using this coordinate system, I get exactly the same format back.

When I select the "Show Data Preview", the degree symbol is not being interpreted as such. This was input into the excel file with an ANSII code of Alt +0176, but Essentials is not allowing me to use this character.

I've used Notepad to save my .csv file in UTF-8 format with double quotations. The format appears normal in the data preview window.
But I still get the error...."Selected location fields do not contain any valid data"
Does anyone have a clue as to why this is happening?

Hi Walter
it may be as simple as lines of Latitude being equivalent to the Y axis on a Cartesian plane and Longitude equivalent to X
ie you have your columns around the wrong way

When I use the plot add coordinate tool the read out I get is exactly the same I'm trying to import: For example
46°29'30.9461" N
80°50'1.6827" W
Only difference with my .csv file, the seconds are 3x digits past the decimal point, while Essentials delivers 4x.

Hi Walter,
Can you send us a copy of the CSV file? This sounds like a bug to me - if we can replicate it we might be able to find a workaround.

thanks Malcolm,
I'll send it to you via your email account.

Hi Walter and Malcolm
I will repeat my answer in a simpler way.
Lines of Longitude (East-West) = X values
Lines of Latitude (North-South) = Y values
Your dialogue picture shows that you have slected the fields the wrong way round. Arguably your numbers could work that way round if they didn't have N or W hanging off the end of them.
Thanks

Ralph,
where's that facebook 'Like' button. Having actually been to Sudbury (long story) and witnessed how cold it was, I'm not surprised it's at 81 degrees North, and -10 degrees Temp!!!

Hi Walter,
I took a look at the CSV file and we're getting caught up on the N/W hemisphere suffix.
I've filed a bug against the viewer but in the meantime you'll have to chop that off and use negative values for anything that's in the Western or Southern hemisphere.
So, values like:
46°29'30.9461",- 80°50'1.6827"
Should work for you.
Also, Ralph's right - we should use Longitude for the X coordinate and Latitude for the Y coordinate.

-Malcolm

Thanks Malcolm / Ralph,
The DMS format you suggested worked like a charm...! As well, Ralph's suggestions about using the longitude for the x and the latitude for the y was correct as well, since the load csv module automatically exchanged the two headers.
Thank you again gentlemen.
Just wondering Gareth F, since you're now stationed in on another continent, how in tarnations did you ever make up here?

Walter,
Aussie, born and bred mate. Was in Canada for 6 weeks holidays in late 90s touring the east coast later on - heading down from Quebec City to Sault Saint Marie - of all places! They've got a fire-bombing museum there, which is my work interest - of sorts. Long trip on the bus that one! Was amazed to see a frozen Lake Superior though - mind blowing for us downunder!!! Great backpackers there also - bt that's another story best left of forums!
The big Nickel still there in Sudbury. Turns out a guy I worked with at Esri Aus, was from there also. Small world! He works on Geocortex's main competitor over here - Dekho, produced at Esri Aus.
have a great day!
