Sites hang at Authenticate process

Hello,

I have several sites that are external and secured.  Often these sites will hang while trying to authenticate the username/password until it times out.  Any suggestions as to why this may happen?  It is very inconsistent....sometimes it works as expected and other times it will simply not load...very frustrating.
