does instant search work on a numeric field?

i am having trouble with instant search retrieving the correct data.  i have a "unique_id" field that is numeric.  i only have one layer in the index.  when i search on a id number like 477, i do not get any results.  so how can i retrieve the record that has "477" in the "unique _id"  field.  can you specify a specific field in an instant search, like "unique_id:477"

  Just installed Essentials 4.2.1 with html5 viewer 2.3.1 and it works correctly
