Field Format For Reports - Currency

I have a workflow that populates a template report. It queries from a data table inside a REST service. There is no geometry, just the flat table with summarized data so that Workflow doesn't have to do a the heavy lifting. I've formatted the appropriate fields in my .MXD file to 'currency'. However, when the report is generated, the '$' doesn't appear nor does the comma or decimal point. Is there a way to hard-code at least the '$' character into the report template so I can show that it is a currency field?
