Resolve Measurement and Geocode issues with your own Geometry Service

Hi Folks,

We've had several reports from users about issues with the measurement tools or with geocoding, especially geocoding from the global search box.

Measurement and geocoding make use of Esri's Geometry Service to get measurement results and reproject points between spatial references.

The default service that we use is "http://sampleserver3.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/Geometry/GeometryServer".  However, it seems that this service has been intermittent or may even be returning errors.  This will result in [ERROR] being shown instead of measurements, or no results back from a geocode search.

Buffering, or any custom workflows that may use a geometry service will also be affected.

The best way to avoid this problem is to use your own Geometry service.  ArcGIS Server has it preloaded, so if it's not running already you just need to start it.  Once you have it running, get the URL to your Geometry Service and put it into your Site configuration under the GIS Services region, using the Geometry tab:

/customer/servlet/servlet.FileDownload?file=00P6000000em1KVEAY

Using your own Geometry server may also improve performance if you're buffering lots of features.

  We also discovered this problem affects Buffer operations, resulting in an error when trying to buffer a selection.  I found a working ESRI geometry service we could use temporarily, so if you need to make a quick change before setting up your own service you can try the following:

  http://sampleserver6.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/Utilities/Geometry/GeometryServer
