Custom content in toolbar region

According to the HTML5 2.3 Administrator and Developer Guide (page 66) it is possible to put custom content on the tool bar using a region. How can I achieve this?

I've created a region on the toolbar and I'm referencing this region in my view's configuration but I can't see my view or the region being created in the dom document.

  Apologies, I doing something wrong. If you add a region to the toolbar you can then simply refer to that region in your view and it should appear there in the dom document.
