How can I convert the selected features my map into geometry in my workflow?

I am trying the create a tool that converts a selection in my map into geomerty. The idea is that Workflow 1 is used first to select the features (from only one layer), then the user decides whether they want to do something with the selection and moves onto Workflow 2. I am using html 4.1.2.

  If you upgrade to a newer version of GE, you can use the Get Feature Set Extent activity to get the geometry envelope of your selected features and then use that to select features from other layers.

   

  At your version, you can use the Union Task activity to get the geometry of a feature set.
