What to install on a server to make sql spatial work in a the sql activity

I have a sql activity in a workflow that queries our SDE and the query returns the shape field. When this workflow runs on my local client in simulator mode there is not any issues, the query works fine. But, when I upload to the server and it runs, the shape field is causing an exception (works when shape field removed from results). I've installed the sqlsysClrTypes but it does not help. What is the trick to making this work without installing SQL server? We are using 2008 R2.
