How do I use the JSON To Dictionary workflow activity?

I've found a few results in these forums, but they all seem to indicate that the JSON To Dictionary activity must be preceded by lots of customized Newtonsoft JSON voodoo magic before the activity will work.  Is this still true?

 

I have a JSON string with an array of two values, but the activity won't accept a JSON string as an IN value and convert it to a Dicitonary (as the name insidiously implies) because the Dicitonary output is String,Object while the JSON in is String,String.

 

This seems less than useless to me. What is the point of an activity named JSON To Dictionary with IN and OUT arguments that are incompatible?

  when you add the create dictionary activity, you have the option to do a string, string.  Let me know if this works, I'm having issues with getting the selected features passed to a dictionary so I can make a report out of it.
