Custom Symbology Bug

That is correct. This configuration exists for Silverlight Viewer compatibility, and isn't used by the HTML5 Viewer.

The HTML5 Viewer will automatically pick the renderer type and doesn't present this option to the user.

It will use a unique value renderer if:
    • It is a string field
    • The field has a coded domain
    • Or there just aren't enough unique numeric values to create a class breaks renderer for the selected number of breaks
It will use a class breaks renderer if it is a numeric or date field and there is enough data available to create the breaks.

You can turn off symbolization for an entire layer in configuration, or prevent symbolization on a field by hiding it. There currently isn't a way to have a field visible and also prevent symbolization on it in the HTML5 Viewer -- though if this would be useful to you, please let us know.

This would, of course, be useful to us and everyone else using the HTML5 viewer.

I've filed this improvement, and we'll be taking a look at including it in a future version of the Viewer. Thanks for your feedback!

I guess the "Allow per request modification of layer order and symbology" setting is not enabled for your mapservice in ArcGIS Server?
