How can I show a datalink result in the Map Tip drop down menu?

In my zoning layer there is a datalink on a field to show the name of the zone beside the zone code itself. This displays fine in the Map Tip window, e.g.:

Zone: M1 - Light Industrial

 

but in the drop down it only ever displays as

 

Zone: M1 - 

 

I know datalinks can have a delay, and in fact on first display of the Map Tip result, the zone name is missing. But by paging through the Map Tip results and returning to the zoning result, the datalink value is there. But it never appears in the drop down. I am wondering if it's even possible. In the drop down menu, can the delay never be overcome?
